Hardship Keeps you Alive

Assalamu’alaikum brothers and sisters,

How was your Eid? What did you get up to? Anything special? I’m sure that you guys had a great time celebrating Eidul Fitri festival with your extended family members and fellow friends. Sorry for the long silence. Mid semester break will end sooner or later and classes will start as usual. So I hope that we could set up our heart and mind in a peak of preparedness. Here, I have an analogy to share with you guys. Just to give you the picture of how awesome and beautiful makhluq that Allah has created in order for us to ponder. Subhanallah! God the Al-Mighty.

Okay, people would always love to eat a fresh fish right? Especially Japanese people. Well, most of the Japanese mentioned that to keep fish tasting fresh all the time, they add a small shark into a tank. The shark eats a few fish and most of the fish that stay alive is in a very energetic and dynamic state. Subhanallah, very interesting, isn’t it? You see the fish are challenged and hence are constantly on the move. Same as the difficulties and hardships that we gone through in our lives are exactly like little sharks. The challenge that we face keeps us fresh. Allah sends them to ensure that we stay ALIVE, AWAKE, VIBRANT and ACTIVE in our lives. But if we begin to go easy on our duties, we may be one of the fish eaten by the shark.

Thus, whenever you are in the middle of difficulties just don’t give up. Instead we should reorganize and restructure with full determination, knowledge and ask help from Allah, the Source of All Power. He has always had the best solutions to your problem and trouble, insha Allah.

“If Allah helps you, none can overcome you; and if He forsakes you, who is there after Him that can help you And in Allah (Alone) let believers put their trust.” (Ali Imran, 3: 160)

With best wishes to see you guys succeed at the highest level!

Palestin Tercinta

Jika seseorang yang membela tanah airnya kerana diserang dan dirobek oleh penjajah dipanggil pengganas, apa pula panggilannya buat penceroboh yang membunuh dengan kejam dan merampas tanah orang lain tanpa batas?

Ia bukan hanya perjuangan membebaskan tanah air sendiri, namun ia peperangan membela kesucian tanah milik Umat Islam sedunia.

Seluruh umat Islam wajib membebaskan Palestin – Sheikh Abu Bakar

Asy-Syaheed Ubaidah

For the memories of our beloved brother Ubaidah Mahir Abdul Mu'ti Al-Qudsi Ad-Duwaik, 25th years old who passed away Sunday morning (13/9/2009) at the hospital in Palestine after weeks of suffering from his wounds. Ubaidah was one of the International Islamic University – Malaysia students. Peaceful and active member in Al Aqsa Friends Society.

He was at his hometown Al Khaleel (Hebron) on his way to perform the prayers at the mosque when the Israeli soldiers shot him and left him bleeding before taking him to the hospital. At the hospital, neither his family nor his lower were allowed to visit him.

The reasons behind shooting and killing this peaceful friend - who’s wedding was scheduled to be within the coming few weeks – are not that relevant.

A message which I received from my friend on that day:

May Allah accept and place him among His syuhada'

ImHalal, A new Islamic search engine

As Google and Yahoo's compete to win the world, ImHalal, a new “Halal” search engine that filters out content based on Islamic principles emerges to appeal to Muslim users.

The search engine collected its name from permissible objects and action. The new search engine appears to meet the standards of Islam.

The imhalal.com provides religious Muslims with the opportunity to access the internet without searching through content that is considered haram or forbidden, according to Islamic Law.

The halal search engine categorizes haram search results into three levels.

Haram search results will be led to a note reading Oops! Your search inquiry has a Haram level of 1 out of 3. This means that the results fetched by ImHalal.com could be haram!

However, the user may access to the results at the first two levels. The search engine gives a link reading If you still think the results will be clean click me!. Clicking on the link allows the user to proceed with the search.

Search terms of the third levels will be directed to a note tempting the users to change the key word.

The note reads Oops! Your search inquiry has a Haram level of 3 out of 3! I would like to advise you to change your search terms and try again.

Electrifying Ramadhan Efficiency

Salam my dear brothers and sisters,

Have you noticed that each year, Ramadhan goes by faster and faster? How much are we missing? Did we really spend most of our time to develop our spiritual needs? Soon, the blessed month of Ramadhan will be leaving us once again. This holy month can’t be left to become a blur in our memories.

The fruit of fasting ought to be that is rich inner which the Quran calls taqwa. Taqwa becomes the key which can unlock all the doors leading to the blessings such as honour, prosperity and freedom from fear and unease in-this-world. Also taqwa leads to success, Paradise and God’s good pleasure in the life-to-come. Hence, within these few days left lets us electrify our Ramadhan to become more efficient in developing the closeness towards Allah.

How? Well, we have to be smart and think about how we can MAXIMIZE the effectiveness we want to earn! Let’s think like a businessman who always concerned on small investment but big profit. Ramadhan is surely the perfect time. So, Inshallah following is a short list of suggested ibadah to share with you guys:

1. Recite some Quran after every Prayer. Actually, if you read 3-4 pages after every Prayer you can finish the entire Quran in Ramadan!

2. Study the Quranic Tafseer every morning. Or whenever you feel free.

3. Learn to control your tongue and lower your gaze. Remember the Prophet's warning that lying, backbiting, and a lustful gaze all violate the fast!

4. Experience the joy of Tahajjud prayers late at night. Allocate and submit yourself purely and fully to Allah.

5. Seek forgiveness and recite istighfar as much as you could:

"Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun kareemun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni"
(O Allah, You are the One who grants pardon for sins, loves forgiving, so forgive me.)

"Astaghfirullah hallazi lailaha illa huwal Hayyul Qayyum wa atubu ilaih"
(I seek forgiveness from Allah, the Almighty, there is no God but He. He is self-Existent, the Eternal and I return to Him)

So, I hope that we gain something out of this Ramadhan. May Allah grant us the ability to change and transform ourselves to be a better slave of Allah and not to be of those who are prevented from His Mercy. May He also allow us all to enter into His Forgiveness in this blessed month of Ramadhan and in all the other Ramadhans we live to see. Ameen. Indeed He is the One who Hears and He is the One to Respond.

How To Celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr

This is One of the Happiest Times in the Year for Any Muslim

After the culmination of the month of worship - Ramadan - the first day of the next month, Shawaal, is the day of `Eid Al-Fitr. "`Eid Al-Fitr" means "the festivity of breaking the fasting (routine)". In Arabic, the word "`Eid" literally means "that which returns" and "Fitr" means "breaking/splitting". In other words, it is a day that returns every year in the Islamic lunar calendar, that signifies the end of the Ramadan fasting.
It is a day of rejoicing, because in Islam, devout worship and the performance of good deeds to get the Pleasure of Allah are considered just cause for celebration. After a month of continuous fasting, Muslims are endorsed to rejoice.
The following steps detail how to celebrate `Eid Al-Fitr:

  1. The night before `Eid, the Shawaal moon is sighted:

On the eve of the 29th or 30th of Ramadan, eager eyes look up towards the sky to spot the crescent that signals the arrival of `Eid. Climbing rooftops or gathering in balconies to peer at the night sky is an exciting ritual, especially for children, who love any kind of adventure. Once the crescent is spotted, smiles break across faces as people greet each other with `Eid wishes, recite the Islamic takbeer of "Allahu Akbar" (meaning "Allah is the greatest"), and light-heartedly exchange hugs. Eager hands are raised in supplication to Allah, just the way Prophet Muhammad [صلى الله عليه و سلم] prayed on spotting the crescent. Muslims pray to Allah that He accepts all the acts of worship they did during Ramadan, and that He blesses them with higher levels of faith and the steadfastness to continue on the path of righteousness for the rest of the year. The women hasten to start preparing the recipes for the next day's celebration, a major part of which will be eating a hearty breakfast, lunch and dinner!
Hand decorated with hennaShining new clothes, shoes and accessories are taken out and prepared for the next morning's prayer. The girls and women decorate their hands with mehndi or "henna", and it is permissible for one Muslim household to host a pre-`Eid dinner party for the ladies to get together to put henna on each other. However, staying up late to "party" is discouraged. The focus should be retiring to bed early in order to awaken easily before dawn the next day.
This night is also the time period during which the charity of Fitr should be distributed to the poor and needy by the head of the household. This is a fixed amount of staple food such as flour, dates or rice; alternatively, the price of this staple could also be given as Fitr charity.
A point to note is that some Muslims spend the night before `Eid roaming the city's streets, ogling members of the opposite sex, thronging markets on the pretext of buying bangles, listening to music, having ice cream or getting henna put on hands. Fireworks and other paraphernalia are used to break the peace and quiet of the night. Such activities are against the spirit of Islam and the etiquette of celebrating the arrival of `Eid in a dignified way.
  2. The morning of `Eid before the prayer:

The whole family should wake up well before dawn. They should perform the Fajr (pre-dawn) prayer, have breakfast, take a full shower, then get dressed in their best clothes for the `Eid prayer. This prayer is performed in congregation behind an imam at any open place, called the `Eidgah. Women are especially encouraged to participate in this prayer, although nowadays women tend to make excuses, the foremost of which is that they can not get ready or dressed up in time, or that it is too tedious to get the children ready at such an early hour. They should get dressed up for `Eid prayer, but should observe hijab when they appear before men. It is the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad [صلى الله عليه و سلم] to eat something sweet as breakfast before proceeding for `Eid prayer. This can be a few odd-numbered dates, or sheer khorma (pictured), a traditional sweet dish made of milk, dry fruit and vermicelli.
It is also the sunnah to recite the Islamic takbeer "Allahu Akbar" continuously until the `Eid prayer commences.
  3. `Eid prayer: Mosques and open grounds are used to conduct the huge congregation of `Eid prayer. The prayer is led by an imam and consists of two units, or "rak'ahs". Several takbeer's of Allahu Akbar are reiterated during this prayer (this characteristic is the main distinguishing quality of the `Eid prayer, one that makes it different from the normal supererogatory salah prayed at the same time on other days). After the prayer, the Muslims sit at their places in congregation and listen to the spiritually-rejuvenating sermon -- or khutbah -- delivered by the imam, which lasts no more than 15 to 20 minutes at the most. In this sermon, he thanks Allah Almighty for blessing everyone with the month of Ramadan, and prays for everyone's acts of worship therein to be accepted.
After the khutbah ends, the Muslims spend a few minutes greeting and meeting each other, exchanging hugs and kisses, and/or exchanging gifts. Usually the women are in a separate portion of the ground or mosque, and their children are with them, so this part of the `Eid morning is filled with gleeful chatter and children's laughter.
  4. Eating and drinking favorite food in moderation:

After `Eid prayer, Muslims go visiting. Families usually gather at an elder's residence in Muslim countries, and at a community center, or another Muslim family's house or yard, in non-Muslim countries. A large variety of food is laid out as brunch. This is the first time in a month's time that Muslims can openly eat in the morning on a communal level, so the spirits are high and the mood is festive. There is nothing wrong with having such a party on `Eid day, as long as the Islamic requirements, of preventing mixing between men and women, are followed.

Traditionally, an `Eid trolley or platter is prepared by the women of every household, which includes sweet dishes and other recipes, varying according to local cuisine. It is important to note, however, that everyone should be careful not to overeat or overspend on eating during `Eid celebrations. Families tend to compete in buying the most expensive attire to wear on `Eid get-togethers and extravagant dishes to serve on their banquet, which goes into the realm of excess or extravagance, and should be avoided.
  5. Meeting neighbors, relatives, and other friends: The rest of the day, Muslim families can call on neighbors, friends and other distant relatives. People utilize the festival of `Eid to catch up with others, whom they can not meet for the rest of the busy year. In Muslim countries, three days of `Eid are national holidays, so families have ample time to go visiting. In non-Muslim countries, though, `Eid day is a working day as usual, so this aspect of visiting everyone might not be so common as part of `Eid celebration.
  6. Using permissible modes of entertainment to enjoy the rest of the day: The Prophet Muhammad [صلى الله عليه و سلم] allowed children, particularly minor girls, to play the "daf" - a kind of drum - on the day of `Eid, and to sing decent, inspiring poems to its beat. This sunnah can be followed by Muslim children on `Eid even today. The Islamic restrictions and regulations within which this may be done, however, are listed here.
Families can eat out at restaurants, visit the zoo or amusement park, host a backyard barbeque, or go for a picnic on the beach or hillside.
They can also play sports that they enjoy, such as cricket, which families particularly enjoy playing together in South Asia, or baseball, frisbee, volleyball or just catch. It is better to indulge in ourdoor activities than to spend the `Eid holidays lounging before the television, viewing one entertainment program after another.
Muslims should also get in touch with their remote loved ones and wish them a Happy `Eid; this can be done over the phone, via tangible or electronic `Eid greeting-cards, or text messages.
`Eid is a time of rejoicing, sharing, doing away with petty grudges harbored against family, friends or relatives, and forgiving others. It is a time of the year in which Muslims communally celebrate their brotherhood.

Islam in Nigeria

Islam found its way to Nigeria about two centuries ago, starting from the north of the country, and was brought by Arab and Muslim merchants who came not only for business purposes, but also for spreading the word of Allah.

From the north, Islam then spread to the south of the country, and now it is spreading to all the other parts. It was from the south that Christianity found its way into Nigeria, brought to the country by the British colonizers.

Nigeria’s population is now in the region of 120 million, as per the 1996 census, with Muslims accounting for 80,000,000 (70% of the population), with Christianity and animism followers making up the rest of the population.

There are 333 tribes in Nigeria, the most prominent being the Hausa, said to be the largest tribe in Africa, and they are mainly concentrated in the northern part of the country and some of the neighboring countries of the north. The Hausa are followed by the Yorubas, who are mainly concentrated in the south of the country, and the Ibos in the east. Each of the tribes has its own customs and traditions, just like tribes in the rest of the world.

Christian missionaries have intensified their efforts in trying to convert the Muslims, taking advantage of the economic weakness of the Muslims and helping them improve their conditions by extending a helping hand to them. The result is that many Muslims now are only Muslims nominally, and they no longer see the difference between the two religious faiths.

However, the Muslim activists are trying to counter the Christianization efforts by educating the Muslims on the various aspects of Islam. By the Grace of Allah, their efforts are paying off, despite the scarcity of their resources.

Blogger Workshop & Countdown Timer

Alhamdulillah. Granted by the permission of Allah S.W.T., Journalism Club has been successfully organized a mini blogger workshop yesterday on 6 September 2009.

The objective of this program is mainly to reorganize and structuring the development of the IIUM Journalism Club blog as well as to get the hands-on on how to set up and design a blog.

Regarding one of the issue yesterday, some participant may want to add a simple countdown timer just like what we have up there. I have corrected the link and now you can get it by simply click at the countdown timer itself or you can click here. It will bring you to a countdown maker website. Once you generate the code, simply paste it into your html code widget provided by the blogspot. Save it and insya-Allah your countdown timer will be there.

An issue also arise from our visitor, brother myadlan, on how come I can countdown the Lailatul Qadr. Hope that you will not misjudge it to be any deviation of Islamic teaching. As what I countdown for is the 20th night of Ramadhan which indicate the starting of the last 10 days of Ramadhan. During this period, Muslims has been encouraged by Prophet Muhammad to perform extra Ibadah to Allah S.W.T. as Lailatul Qadr might fall in any of these last ten days.

Have a good Ramadhan. May Allah blessed you all.
